Kelvin

Full name: Kelvin John Kweka (‘Kelvin’)
Date of birth: 1997
Lives with: Grandma
Brothers & sisters: 1 sister
Joined the Sarakasi program in: January 2010

Kelvin was born in Kilimanjaro and finished primary school there. His mother died in 2001 after suffering from aids. She had two children, Kelvin and his older sister Remeha. His father lives in Arusha, but doesn’t have any money to support and raise his children. Therefore Kelvin and his sister moved to their grandma when their mother died. Their grandma is mother Flora, who works for Sarakasi Ya Vijana. Together with five of her grandchildren she lives in a rented home, with two chambers and only six square meters. Mother Flora is very happy that she can work for Sarakasi Ya Vijana. She thinks it is very important that her grandchildren will be educated. Every day she “struggles for education, because it is the key to a better future”. This is an important reason why Kelvin wants to go to secondary school next year.

School results: Kelvin performs very well in school. At the last school exams he became 15th out of 51 children. His specialties are English, Mathematics and Science. These are also the courses he likes most. Because the level of primary education is not very high, Kelvin gets extra tuition in Mathematics, English and geography.

Hobbies: Kelvin likes to play soccer and in the evening he likes to read.

Future: Kelvin wants to become a medical doctor, since it is a good job and he is very good in Science. (A lot of children who are good in science become a doctor, if there is enough money for the education.)

Message from his sponsor: We don’t know Machteld in person, but we know a lot of youngsters who would like to do the same as she does. That is why we support Twiga. Furthermore we like the business approach, with a clear and specific goal. When this goal is reach in a good way, new responsibilities arrise, which are the graduates as Kelvin, Hassan and all the other. Ofcourse you want to help these children, after all, they already proved that they are capable of learning. To all of you kids: take your changes, you deserve it!
